    I think what you should do is read this book first and get very cozy with it: http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Database-Systems-C-Date/dp/0201385902

    I think that will give you everything you need to become a master in SQL.

    Regarding the mySQL DBMS I recommend this website: http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/MySQL_Internals

    It talks a lot about the code, but most of the information there will give you a very good view of how mySQL works, and with it manage mySQL better.

    This book will also provide very good internals view for administration: http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-MySQL-Internals-Sasha-Pachev/dp/0596009577

    This book will give you the best tools for managing a mySQL server: http://www.amazon.com/MySQL-Administrators-Guide-AB/dp/0672326345
